Health Short: The Scoop on Whey Protein

Whey%20Protein.jpgIf you aren't taking a Whey Protein Supplement you are definitely missing out.  Not only is it a good for a meal replacement when needed, but the protein can help maintain your lean muscle mass.  Lean muscle mass is what burns your calories and is a measure of how fast your metabolism is.  More lean muscle = more calories burned.

If you are protein deficient, you are make it very difficult for your body to maintain it's muscle mass and your metabolism!  It will be easier to gain weight and harder to take it off!   So if you're in a hurry grab a piece of fruit and a whey protein shake.

All whey protein is NOT created equal.  The cheaper forms of Whey Protein are denatured.  Denaturing makes the protein in the shake virtually useless to the body.  The better kinds of Whey Protein sold are "hydrolyzed" which means the proteins are broken down by enzymes to be more readily digested.  Hydrolyzed whey is often better absorbed than regular whey and much much better than Denature Whey nutritionally.

Vegans and vegetarians must supplement with protein.  Beans and soy DO NOT contain all of the 20 Essential Amino Acids needed for a healthy body!  Whey protein is made from the liquid portion of milk when cottage cheese is made.  Often it is flavored.  I find that the chocolate the most tolerable.  It is very helpful to have a Whey within 30 minutes of a workout.  This will provide the body with the proper nutrition to rebuild itself after strenuous physical activity.

If you're interested in getting a good Whey Protein Supplement we can recommend a few.  Here's a tip, nothing from Wal-Mart, Target, Walgreens or any other Department Store.  Look for "hydrolyzed" on the label and don't be afraid to pay a little extra for quality, it's well worth it!
